What is Italian Ice

Simply put the modern Italian ice is a mixture of fruit, fruit flavoring, sugar and ice that is churned like an ice cream. It contains no Diary, Fat free and Cholesterol free. Many companies also produce it sodium free, peanut free, gluten free etc.

Italian ice is a premium frozen delicacy totally different from a snow cone or an ice cream. It appeals to both young and old alike.

What is Italian Ice

Italian ice is a sweetened frozen dessert made with fruit (often from concentrates, juices or purées) or other natural or artificial food flavorings, similar to sorbet. It is combined with sweeteners and ice and churned like an Ice cream however it contains no diary, cholesterol or fat.  Italian ice is similar to sorbet and snow cones, but differs from American-style sherbet in that it does not contain dairy or egg ingredients, though it may contain egg white.  It is likely derived from the Sicilian granita, a related dessert which may have been brought by Italian immigrants to the United States. Common flavors include blue raspberry, cherry, lemon, mango, orange, strawberry, watermelon, and blackberry, with numerous other flavors available.

Italian ice is also known as water ice in the Philadelphia metropolitan area (I.e. the Delaware Valley and South Jersey). Like Italian ice, water ice is similarly derived from granita brought to Philadelphia by Italian immigrants. Although there is significant overlap and near synonymy between the two terms, water ice has also been described as a specific type of Italian ice originating in Philadelphia, or a “variation on the more broadly-accepted Italian ice.

Why Italian Ice?

Italian ice is a delightful change from the ordinary.  This unique product has the consistency of a creamy ice cream but is Fat Free, Cholesterol Free and Dairy Free.  The hand-dipped frozen product appeals to both young and old alike. Most are Gluten free and sodium free. The caloric intake is about the same a cola. Because of its non diary and calories and unique fruit flavor, it is used in a lot of hospital settings. It is be produced with real fruit, fruit puree or flavoring. It is found in a lot of school systems because of its manufactured fruit content.

It is be manufactured in a home setting, a small business setting or mass-produced with large machines. Unlike a shaved ice the product is churned like an ice cream maintaining the same delicious flavor to the last bite. Again it contains no diary so lactose intolerant people love to see us coming, especially on a hot day! 


Short History of Italian Ice

The true origin and history of Italian ice is unclear. Many cultures have been considered to be the true originators of Italian ice, including the Arabs, the Sicilians, the Europeans, the Turkish, the Chinese, the French and the Spanish. It is believed that Italian ice came about accidentally due to someone leaving Sarbat, a syrupy fruit drink, on ice for too long.

Due to its name, Italian ice may appear to be most popular in Italy. In actuality, Italian ice is an international delight enjoyed by many people. Depending on the region of the world, the locally preferred flavors and textures may change, but the general preparation and ingredients remain the same.

Italian Ice business

One of our goals for this website and blog is to create a business sounding board for the Italian ice business. I started this business and thru a lot of advice from very kind people and trial and error I created an Italian business that brought in additional income that helped pay expenses. I can see this as an ideal side gig or a full time venture. Each has its pros and cons. I also would like to include other frozen side hustles into this website altho I will initially concentrate on Italian ice, ice creams, snow cones, smoothies and other frozen delicacies could be included. and added as a our sounding board for these businesses as well.


Italian ice is a wonderful product that can be enjoyed by everyone! Its rich creamy flavors will put a smile on anyones face. Those in the know east and east coast have been enjoying the product for a long time, I hope to be able to introduce this product to the rest of the USA.

In the next few months I will be creating a website that will allow any and everyone to input their ideas and experiences into the “icy” product business. This website will grow and any suggestions would be more than appreciated.

I want to make a comment about IcyProfits name for my website. This was the name of a website started by a very nice lady named Karen. She decided to give up her site and domain and I bout the domain and I hope will be able to create a website as well put together as she did. I appreciate her initial encouragement that allowed me to start and create a business that was fun and a real interesting venture.
